Evidence for God

If we believe what we read in the media, belief in God is an old-fashioned, minority position. But as Christians we think there are very good reasons to believe in God, and doing so makes far more sense of the world than to not believe. We can never prove him, but we do think belief in him is a reasonable position for an intelligent person to hold to.

Head: Truth, reason and philosophy (Sunday 16th September, 10:30am)

For thousands of years, intelligent people have found belief in God an intellectually satisfying position. We’ll look at the ancient arguments for God’s existence that many people today have never heard before. We’ll also look at whether there are limitations to what we can do with our minds – is human reason enough to discover all truth? How much can we know about God by using our minds?

Heart: Prayer, miracles and subjective experience (Sunday 21st October, 10:30am)

Why is it that Christians are so adamant that God is there, even when they can’t necessarily explain how they know it? The answer: experience. Christians claim to have experienced God: his presence, answered prayer, miracles. “You ask me how I know he lives? He lives within my heart!”, as the old hymn goes. We’ll think about “spiritual” experiences and consider how much weight they should have.

World: The world around us (Sunday 18th November, 10:30am)

Many Christians (and others!) look at the incredible complexity and scale and beauty of the world around us and conclude that there must be an intelligent force behind it all. And yet there are also fires, floods and earthquakes. Does the world around us point to God, and if so, how much can we know about him?
